What to expect on an Explore Wales 4x4 Tour

We love crafting routes that encompass the very best of Wales’ iconic green lanes and landmarks. As well as having an experienced guide, our routes always consider driver experience, vehicle capability and environmental conditions so you get the absolute most from the tour.
Explore Wales Tour
We keep our groups small, blending into the countryside and keeping communication between the drivers and guide clear. We're very happy tailoring the tour to what you and the group will most enjoy.

Lanes and Locations

The Wye Valley

Experience the ancient and luscious tracks of lower Wye Valley, tracing the Welsh border along sections of Offa’s Dyke and the River Wye. This route makes a perfect day out for intermediate drivers, suitable all year round and in any weather.

Mid Wales

Taking in Crychan Forest & Strata Florida, Mid Wales affords some of the longest off-tarmac driving in the UK. A fantastic weekend trip for intermediate drivers, or part of a weekend trip for advanced drivers. Subject to water levels this route can be used all year round.

Snowdonia

Explore the waterfalls, forests & ancient mountainous roads of Snowdonia! A weekend is recommended as there is so much to take in, options for all conditions and experience levels.

Shropshire Borders

Panoramic views traversing the Long Mynd & Offas Dyke, this area is perfect for vehicles with lower clearance and for those who are new to green laning. Day Trip or as a Weekend, any weather.

Sarn Helen

Air down for the longest unsurfaced section of this ancient Roman road! This is an epic day out and can be a single trip, or part of a weekend trip. Only possible during the summer months due to seasonal winter closure.

Nant Y Moch

A real adventure for even the experienced driver, explore the remote and rugged terrain of Nant Y Moch. This unpopulated area provides miles of terrain to cover with very few tarmac miles and some incredible scenery.

Hay on Wye

Tour the Upper Wye Valley - rolling hills & steep valleys, with so much terrain to choose from this area offers both scenic days for everyone and serious tracks for seasoned drivers. Some of these are over grass and best in summer.

Elan Valley

An iconic location for green laning, the Elan Valley offers fantastic terrain for new and intermediate drivers, often best as a one day trip or with some permission as a through trip over the Cambrian Mountains.

North Wales

Bomber Lane, Happy Valley, Carn March Arthur - the area around Machynlleth & Dolgellau features some of the most iconic lanes in the UK. A weekend is preferable to experience what North Wales has to offer.

Brechfa Forest

Roman Road, Halfway Forest, Spicy Lane - There is plenty to choose from for all experience levels in West Wales. As well as being regulars at the famous Dunlop Hill, we also regularly explore Brechfa Forest, iconic challenging tracks nested in a unique woodland setting.

How do I know my vehicle is ready to tackle Wales?

Don’t worry, you don’t need a huge winch and giant tires! However you must have a roadworthy vehicle (Tax, Insurance and MOT) If your vehicle has a clean bill of health and you know and trust it to be reliable this is ample.

As well as the above I would highly recommend a good set of tyres. Mud-Terrains are not required but All-Terrains are recommended. Quality tires with a good sidewall and if you're unsurejust get in touch, I am happy to help.
